MEASURING YOUR SIDING

We have designed this page to help you determine the amount of siding you have on your home. This is only an example and may not represent the actual amount of siding you have on your home. This does not take into consideration causation exceptions (siding excluded because it was installed improperly).

Step 1     Multiply the 40 ft. length by the 8 ft. height to determine the gross surface area of the wall. The gross surface area of this wall is 320 square feet.

Length x Height = Surface Area

40 ft. Long x 8 ft. High = 320 sq. ft.
Step 2     Subtract the amount of the surface area not to be considered, including openings, regardless of size.

In this example, subtract the surface area of the garage door, the two windows and the door. The surface area of the garage door is 56 sq. ft., each window is 8 sq. ft. and the door is 19 sq. ft. therefore, the surface area of the wall is:

320 sq. ft. - 56 sq. ft. - 8 sq. ft. - 8 sq. ft. - 18 sq. ft. = 230 sq. ft.

This measurement must be calculated for each wall that contains the product, and only the portion of the wall that contains the product. DO NOT INCLUDE the measurements of the other building materials such as brick, stucco, or other materials in this measurement.
Step 3     Determine the surface area of the gable wall if the product is also used on the gable ends on the house. The calculation is as follows.

Length of the gable Base x Height of the Gable x 1/2 = Surface Area

Example: 20 sq. ft. X 4 sq. ft. X 1/2 = 40 sq. ft.
Step 4     Add the surface area of the product to the surface area of the gable to obtain the TOTAL surface area of the product for the story.
Step 5     Record the total.
